About Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment that involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized environment. This process increases the amount of oxygen your blood can carry, promoting enhanced oxygen delivery to tissues throughout the body. Under normal atmospheric conditions, oxygen is transported primarily by red blood cells. However, HBOT allows oxygen to dissolve directly into plasma, cerebrospinal fluid, and other bodily fluids, significantly elevating oxygen levels in tissues. This heightened oxygenation can accelerate healing processes, reduce inflammation, and combat infections.

Mechanism of Action

In a typical HBOT session, patients enter a hyperbaric chamber where the atmospheric pressure is increased to between 1.5 to 3 times the normal pressure. While inside, patients breathe 100% medical-grade oxygen. This combination of increased pressure and pure oxygen intake elevates the oxygen concentration in the bloodstream, facilitating greater oxygen delivery to tissues. Such elevated oxygen levels can enhance the body’s natural healing mechanisms, support the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis), and improve white blood cell function, aiding in infection control.

Applications in Adjunctive Therapies

HBOT has been explored as an adjunctive treatment for various conditions, including:

Cancer Therapy: HBOT may improve tumor oxygenation, potentially enhancing the effectiveness of certain cancer treatments. Studies suggest that HBOT can modulate the tumor microenvironment, making cancer cells more susceptible to treatments like radiation and chemotherapy.

Lyme Disease: Research indicates that HBOT can alleviate symptoms associated with chronic Lyme disease, such as fatigue and neurological impairments. The therapy’s ability to increase oxygen levels may inhibit the growth of the causative bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi.

Long COVID: Emerging evidence suggests that HBOT may benefit individuals experiencing persistent symptoms following COVID-19 infection. Patients have reported improvements in fatigue, cognitive function, and overall quality of life after undergoing HBOT.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS): trials have demonstrated that HBOT can reduce the severity of CFS symptoms and enhance patients’ quality of life. The therapy’s oxygen-boosting effects are believed to counteract the underlying pathophysiology of CFS.

Hard-Shell vs. Soft-Shell Chambers:

HBOT can be administered using either hard-shell or soft-shell chambers, each with distinct characteristics:

Hard-Shell Chambers: Constructed from rigid materials like steel or acrylic, these chambers can achieve higher pressures (up to 3.0 ATA) and allow patients to breathe 100% medical-grade oxygen. They are often preferred in clinical settings for their ability to deliver precise and higher-pressure treatments.

Soft-Shell Chambers:Made from flexible materials, these portable chambers typically operate at lower pressures (up to 1.3 ATA) and rely on ambient air with oxygen concentrators. While more accessible, they may not provide the same therapeutic benefits as hard-shell chambers due to their pressure limitations and lower oxygen purity.

Safety and Quality Considerations:

Ensuring patient safety is paramount in HBOT. At Provo Health, we prioritize:

Chamber Pressurization: Our hard-shell chambers are pressurized with air, while patients breathe 100% medical-grade oxygen through masks or hoods. This method ensures optimal oxygen delivery and maintains chamber safety.Oxygen Source Quality:We use medical-grade oxygen cylinders rather than concentrators, guaranteeing a consistent and high-purity oxygen supply. Oxygen concentrators may deliver lower purity levels, potentially diminishing therapeutic efficacy.

Did You Know that Your Body is Meant to Heal in a Specific Order...

and if it doesn't, you'll forever feel like you're stuck chasing symptoms!

Most people feel trapped in the endless cycle of medical treatments—two steps forward, two steps back—never gaining real momentum while draining time and money. But the problem isn’t them; it’s the approach. Healing has to happen from the
root up, not from symptoms down. When you rebuild the foundation, the rest naturally falls into place because the body is a self-regulating system, designed to restore balance. The key is following the right protocols in the right order.

I love Provo Health! it has more of a family feel, everyone there is VERY kind and accepting. I went in to get a Meyers cocktail IV, and Katie did it, and made me feel so comfortable and safe! Love coming to a place where you feel like you matter and feel loved!

I got sick in December with a terrible cough. It made it hard to breath, eat and sleep as the coughing would get so violent. Went to the ER and all they prescribed was cough syrup with codeine in it. After weeks of not getting better, my daughter told be about Provo Health and within one treatment everything changed. I'm getting my life back finally. I have hope again!

I think the Hyperbarics saved my life! I did it to support my body with lung cancer. I could tell that my breathing was improving as well as my overall health. My surgeon who at first thought would have to remove half my lung then did a PET scan and said he would just remove the cancer and any lymph nodes involved. In the end the cancer was less than 2 cm and no lymphnodes had cancer. I recovered from surgery with flying colors thanks to my treatments at Provo Health!
